PROGRAMS OF THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

How We Stay on Track

All Knights of Columbus councils follow a set of general categories that help focus efforts into programs that keep us working towards positive activities in our lives and those around us. We have 4 program categories to spread our work out. Those are:

  • FAITH – activities to strengthen the Catholic faith of men and their families
  • FAMILY – meant to strengthen the bonds within families
  • COMMUNITY – Knights are called to serve others. Our first principle is Charity – at home with our families and in our communities.
  • LIFE – The Knights of Columbus vigorously defends the dignity of each human being at every stage of life.

Do you have a good idea for something we can try out? Or thoughts on how to make what we already are doing just a little better? Something that is an unfortunate truth in life is that good ideas are only as good as the desire and motivation of the person who has them is willing to take them. In a volunteer organization such as the Knights of Columbus, we have heard many “good ideas” over the years. But everyone who is working with the Knights will already have a full plate, which makes it hard for them to pick up and run with suggestions from other members. The best ideas are those that you yourself are willing to take on and lead. No one will put the life into your idea as well as you will. So don’t be afraid to step up and lead something. It doesn’t mean you will be alone. It just means that you will likely need to lead the way on it.

Program Directors for each general program category are simply members who try to keep track of the individual programs under their umbrella. They would try to help guide or provide support for leaders who need things along the way. Such as if they need help to communicate an activity or finding available resources to help them out with something. Then the director for each program would just give the council an update at the general meetings for what’s been going on and what is upcoming in that program. With the website now its even easier to keep members informed and interested in what is happening. We would even welcome newsletter messages or promotions for events. The more hands-on deck the lighter the load. If you are wondering how to get involved in a lighter way, being a Program Leader for an individual program, or a Program Director would be a great start. We try to have someone leading each program who can then in turn support members who chair or lead individual events or efforts within the program. But each individual activity still takes one or more men to lead. There are a lot of hands on deck to accomplish the volume of things that we do each year.

There are links in each program page on the website to the corresponding Supreme Program pages. Those list all the available program activities that Supreme already supports with resources and assistance. For any brother Knight who wants to head up a program or even just a single activity, any of those resources are available to us through the council if we choose to capitalize on them. Its important to note however that we are not limited to only what is listed on the Supreme website. Any program activity can take its own path based on what we need and have available to us. There are many activities over the years that have been done that are not listed anywhere on the Supreme site and yet still are worthwhile efforts that have been made.

The mission of the Knights of Columbus is to provide members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities’ families and young people.
