Supporting the Parish and Our Shephard
One of the great works of all Knights of Columbus councils is support of the parish. We strive to do our best to respond to any call to action from our St.Michaels Catholic Parish and its pastor. In many ways the group to be approached to address requests that are not already addressed by other ministries, is the Knights of Columbus. We have a broad reach with our membership and can pull together a support group to work on a goal presented to us by the parish.
Keeping our work humble is ingrained into us from the start, so often parishoners are not aware of what the Knights have done. It often is not appropriate or in the spirit of chairity to claim credit for work that is greater than the sum. So often members will discuss how its unfortunate that we dont share more of what good work we have done. The flip side of that same coin though, is that fortunately its not just the Knights who do good work in our parish and are underappreciated or under recognized for it. So a little humility goes a long way too. Our integrity isn’t in getting recognized for everything. It is in knowing that we can be asked for help and not somehow hold others to task for it. There is no social cost for the Knights of Columbus to support the parish and that is important to everyone. We can be the big brother that doesnt embarrass or belittle any siblings along the way, but rather protect, shelter, share, and support with love.
We also try to provide and encorage our members to deliver the ushering and collection duties at each mass. Especially at the big ones where we expect to have a large attendance. That function has long been a standard duty of the Knights at our parish, as it has been for many other parishes.
At times our priest or parish council will approach us with a request to accomplish something. Its always in our best interest to show our support to the parish and our priest by doing our best to accomadate those requests.
It would be nice to say we are perfect at accomplishing this task of support. We are still just regular people subject to making mistakes along the way, and sometimes we can drop this ball when it comes to us. It can be a simple thing to lose track of goals like this along the way amid the myriad of requests and tasks we undertake. Its just easier to not make mistakes if we have the hearts and minds of many members helping guide us as we make our decisions. The more the merrier.
